With Jimmy Kimmel serving as co-host to help celebrate Ellen DeGeneres’ 54th birthday (the episode airs today), I can only imagine what will take place during the extravaganza. No doubt some hilarity ensues. The two welcomed “Bridesmaids” and “Mike and Molly” star Melissa McCarthy to the show, who talked about attending her first Golden Globes last week. Having taken to the Lone Star State the previous day, the Kardashian family was back in action with a full afternoon of activity in Dallas, Texas on Thursday (January 26).
With Kim leading the way, the E! reality beauty was flanked by sister Kourtney, brother Robert and mother Kris Jenner as they left their hotel to meet with with Khloe and Lamar for dinner.
The Texas outing comes just as Kim announced that she’s signed on for a recurring role on “Drop Dead Diva” with her episodes set to air beginning this summer.
Of the gig, the 31-year-old wrote, “I am so excited to announce that I’ll be guest starring on Drop Dead Diva this summer. I can’t wait to get to work with everyone on set!! Xo.”
Playing a love interest for Ben Feldman’s Fred named Nikki, creator and executive producer Josh Berman added, “I’m ecstatic to welcome Kim to the Diva family. In discussing the role of Nikki with her, I’m blown away by her smarts, sense of humor, and passion. This series is all about reinvention and I’m so excited to see Kim ?reinvented’ in the world of Drop Dead Diva.”

Actor James Farentino, widely known for his roles on television as well as on the silver screen, died of heart failure Tuesday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. According to family spokesman Bob Palmer, the actor had been battling an illness for some time. He was 73 years old. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Farentino’s first foray into the entertainment world came in 1961, appearing in Broadway’s “Night of the Iguana”. He would soon appear in several television shows, starting with “Naked City” in 1962. He had recurring roles on shows such as “The Bold Ones: The Lawyers”, “Police Story”, “Dynasty” and “ER”, playing George Clooney’s father. On the silver screen he has appeared in films such as “The War Lord” (1965), “The Pad and How to Use It” (1966), “The Final Countdown” (1980), “Dead and Buried” (1981), “Termination Man” (1998), “The Last Producer” (2000) and his last film in 2006, “Drive/II”. The 2012 Oscar Nominations were announced this morning and let me say it is quite a list. There were some fantastic surprises on the list that now have me rooting for those underdogs. I was thrilled when the names of Melissa McCarthy and Jonah Hill were both announced on the list of 2012 Oscar Nominees. Melissa was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in Bridesmaids; Jonah was nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category for his role in Moneyball. <P>Tuesday morning's (January 24) announcement of the 2012 <a href="http://www.mtv.com/movies/oscars">Oscar</a> nominations delivered plenty of surprises. <a href="/news/articles/1677792/oscar-nominations-suprirses-snubs.jhtml">Michael Fassbender ("Shame"), Albert Brooks ("Drive")</a> and Charlize Theron ("Young Adult") were overlooked in the acting categories, while Melissa McCarthy ("Bridesmaids"), Rooney Mara ("The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo") and Max von Sydow ("Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close") scored surprise nominations. But perhaps no category was more head-scratching than Best Original Song. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:666363" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Despite the fact that a <a href="/news/articles/1676284/oscar-2012-best-song-list.jhtml">short list of 39 tracks</a> were eligible for <a href="/news/articles/1677781/academy-award-nominations-2012.jhtml">nomination</a>, only two were named — "<a href="/news/articles/1677837/osar-nomination-man-or-muppet-bret-mckenzie.jhtml">Man or Muppet</a>" from "The Muppets" and "Real in Rio" from "Rio" — leaving tunes from Elton John and Lady Gaga, Pink, will.i.am, Zooey Deschanel, Elvis Costello and Mary J. Blige shut out of the competition. Many Oscar-watchers were left wondering why the Academy would opt away from the traditional five contenders in favor of just two little-heard songs. Well, a closer look at the Oscar rule book shows it's probably less a case of choosing to nominate only two songs than it is simply a case of a single song scoring enough points to secure a nod, and then bringing its closest competition along for the ride. Oscar nominations are arrived at using a <i>very</i> complicated weighted system in which members of the Academy, voting exclusively for members of their own branch (i.e. actors chose the acting nominees, directors vote for directors, etc.), rank contenders in order of preference. From there, a "magic number" is determined that relies on the number of ballots cast for a category, along with a specific mathematical equation. Ballots are tallied and contenders are eliminated through several rounds in a process that tabulates factors like first-place mentions and so on. Once a contender reaches the magic number, they are an Oscar nominee. (The folks over at <i>EW</i>'s <a href="http://popwatch.ew.com/2008/01/09/academy-awards" target="_blank">PopWatch</a> break down the selection steps in great detail.) </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:620119" width="240" height="211"></div><p> So this is how the nominees are determined — with one exception: Best Original Song. In 2009, when the Academy opted to up the number of Best Picture nominees to 10 (the voting body has since altered that number), it also changed the rules for Best Original Song. As <a href="http://www.billboard.com/news/oscar-analysis-what-happened-to-best-original-1005966952.story#/news/oscar-analysis-what-happened-to-best-original-1005966952.story" target="_blank"><i>Billboard</i></a> points out, members of the Academy's music branch now "assign each song a numerical score between 1 and 10, and if no song receives an average of more than 8.25, there are no nominees. If only one song tops the threshold, as clearly happened here, the next highest vote getter secures a nomination as well." This year's Best Original Song category boils down to this: either Bret McKenzie's "Man or Muppet" or "Real in Rio" by songwriting trio Sergio Mendes, Carlinhos Brown and Siedah Garrett secured a score of 8.25 or better, earning a nomination and pulling the #2 vote-getter into the fray. Simply put, members of the music branch didn't award any other song, including John and Gaga's duet "Hello Hello" or Blige's "The Help" track "Living Proof," a score high enough to secure a nomination. But lest you think that this means the category is all but locked, think again. While selecting the Oscar nominees is an intensely mathematical process, picking the winners is much easier. Once the nominations are decided, every member of the Academy can vote in each category and the nominee that receives the most votes wins. Easy enough. <P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/u2/artist.jhtml">U2</a> didn't even release an album in 2011, but that didn't stop them from raking in plenty of cash. The iconic Irish quartet topped Pollstar's list of the year's most profitable tours, as their massive <a href="/news/articles/1653264/u2-talk-emotional-360-tour-tease-new-album.jhtml">360 Tour</a> moved an impressive 2.4 million tickets worldwide, grossing more than $230 million globally. Their North American dates — which were postponed (and subsequently rescheduled) last year as <a href="/news/articles/1643529/u2-reschedule-north-american-tour-dates-for-2011.jhtml">Bono recovered from back surgery</a> — made $156 million, good enough to give them the highest-grossing tour on this continent, too. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:600842.id:1653089" width="240" height="211"></div><p> <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/swift__taylor/artist.jhtml">Taylor Swift</a> had 2011's second most-profitable North American tour, as her expansive <a href="/news/articles/1667555/taylor-swifts-speak-now-tour-brings-honky-tonk-to-nj.jhtml"><i>Speak Now</i> jaunt</a> racked up $97.7 million at the box office. Swift's country contemporary Kenny Chesney came in at #3, bringing in nearly $85 million in ticket sales, followed by Lady Gaga, who, despite wrapping up the North American leg of her Monster Ball Tour in April, still managed to bring in $63.7 million at the box office. Bon Jovi rounds out Pollstar's top five, grossing more than $57 million. Kanye West and Jay-Z's Throne tour ($48 million), Lil Wayne's "I Am Still Music" trek ($44 million), Britney Spears ($38 million) and Katy Perry ($28 million) also made the <a href="http://www.pollstarpro.com/charts/2011YearEndTop25NorthAmericanTours.pdf" target="_blank">Top 25</a> in North America. British boy band Take That's reunion tour came in second to U2's 360 trek based on worldwide receipts, making $224 million. Bon Jovi grossed nearly $150 million worldwide, good enough for third, with tours by Swift ($104 million worldwide) and Roger Waters ($103 million) rounding out the top five. <P>Here in the States, <a href="/news/articles/1677260/madonna-lady-gaga-born-this-way.jhtml">Madonna sat down with ABC News</a> and had some <i>interesting</i> comments about Lady Gaga. In another <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ukTFzM6Wfdg" target="_blank">interview</a>, on Friday's (January 13) <a href="http://www.bbcamerica.com/the-graham-norton-show/" target="_blank">"The Graham Norton Show,"</a> the singer seemed to take the high road and likened her early days of hustling in New York City to <a href="/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Gaga</a>'s beginnings. "When I first saw her, I saw her performing at a very small club in Manhattan a couple of years ago, maybe it was like three years ago," she said. "I was actually really impressed by her. I thought she was really cool and she did remind me of me back in the day. I liked her rawness and there was something fresh about there and ballsy, and when she spoke to the audience, she sounded like she had a similar sense of humor to me, quite ironic, and I liked her. So I do think she is very talented." That was really the end of the subject during their chat, other than when Madonna teased the British talk-show host about naming his dog after her. However, when he said his other dog was named Bailey, she quipped, "Not Gaga?" Some of that sentiment was mirrored in Madge's ABC interview, the rest of which airs on Friday's night's <i>20/20</i>. While she did call Gaga's "Born This Way" song "reductive" when asked about comparisons to her own "Express Yourself," she went on to say that she sees a lot of her own work in Gaga's. "I certainly think she references me a lot in her work. And sometimes I think it's amusing and flattering and well-done," she said, later adding that she thinks Gaga is "a very talented artist" and that she's making a "statement about taking something that was in the zeitgeist, you know, 20 years ago and turning it inside out and reinterpreting it." Once compared to Angelina Jolie, Megan Fox was destined to have a mega career ahead of her. Well I am not sure what happened. Fueling rumors that they are getting back together, or at least hooking up with each other again, Rihanna and Chris Brown partied at the same club last night.
The two singers, who have been the subject of so much speculation lately, left Greystone Manor, a West Hollywood club, in separate cars, around the same time.
It’s unclear if they came together or headed to the same place after, but Rihanna and Chris Brown were … there at the same time. Make of that what you will.
Again, we emphasize that several people who were at the club Tweeted that as far as they could see, Rihanna and Chris were there with separate groups.
The protective order, which required that the Grammy nominees have no contact with each other after Brown beat Rihanna in 2009, was lifted a year ago.
They’ve also exchanged not-so-subtle Tweets lately, so wouldn’t be at all scandalous, let alone illegal if they were there together. Let the gossip continue …
